LAS VEGAS – At a recent trade show, Alison Wainwright saw a familiar face. What she felt surprised her.

“You know when your heart skips a beat and you’re like, ‘Oh my god, I know that person?’ I had that feeling,” Wainwright said. “It was Daniel.”

The Las Vegas businesswoman from Massachusetts laughs telling the story, because here’s the thing: Daniel is not a real person.

He’s a mannequin.

It’s the sort of nostalgia-based relationship that’s commonplace in Wainwright’s line of work. As founder of Las Vegas Mannequins, her office headquarters is full of the humanlike figures used for fashion displays, storefronts and trade shows, designed in all shapes and sizes.
